Additional Requirements
Some colleges and programs have admission standards that exceed the minimal requirements. Admission to the University does not ensure admission into a specific school or college.
College of Business and Economics
Admission to the 21st Century Business Scholars Program in the College of Business and Economics is based on a combination of high school grade point average (GPA) and the ACT/SAT Math score. Admission space is limited. For consideration to be accepted directly into the 21st Century Business Scholars Program as an incoming freshman, a student must have:
- High School GPA of 3.50 (or better)
- ACT Math score of 26 (or better) or SAT Math score of 590 (or better)
Note: Students not meeting the 21st Century Business Scholars Program requirements may be admitted to the pre-business and economics program.
College of Creative Arts
Acceptance into an undergraduate music degree program is contingent upon admission to WVU as an undergraduate student and a successful performance audition. A musicianship survey is also required. Auditions in the Division of Music are held principally in February and March. Dates for audition and details concerning them are available at the website: http://www.wvu.edu/~music/audition_proced.html. The audition is a preliminary assessment of your potential for success in the program. If you are admitted, your standing is confirmed or revised after the first semester of study.
College of Engineering and Mineral Resources
The College of Engineering and Mineral Resources requires that incoming freshmen meet or exceed the following requirements for admission to Engineering or General Engineering:
Engineering
- 3.0 high school GPA
- 24 ACT composite or 1110 SAT combined Math and Critical Reading
- 27 ACT math score or 620 SAT Math score
General Engineering
- 2.5 high school GPA
- 22 ACT composite or 1030 SAT combined Math and Critical Reading
- 23 ACT math score or 540 SAT Math score
Pre-Engineering
- Less than 2.5 high school GPA
- Less than 22 ACT composite or 1030 SAT combined Math and Critical Reading
- Less than 23 ACT Math score or 540 SAT Math score

Eberly College of Arts and Sciences
The Pre-Computer Science program in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences requires 2 units of algebra, 1 unit of geometry, 1/2 unit of trigonometry or advanced mathematics or one unit of chemistry or physics, as well as meeting or exceeding the following requirements:
- 3.0 cumulative high school GPA, and
- a composite ACT score of 24 and ACT Math score of 27, or
- a combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 1110 and a Math SAT score of 620.
Direct admission to the Forensic Identification program is based on a combination of high school grade point average (GPA) and the ACT or SAT scores. Direct admission space is limited. For consideration to be accepted directly into the program as an incoming freshman, a student must have a combination of the high school GPA range and the indicated ACT composite score, or the combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score:
- 3.8 + high school GPA
- 28+ ACT composite or 1240+ SAT combined Math and Critical Reading
OR - 3.5 – 3.79 high school GPA
- 31+ ACT composite or 1360+ SAT combined Math and Critical Reading
Note: Students not meeting the direct admission requirements may be admitted to the “Pre-Forensic Identification program.
Incoming Pre-Forensic Identification students will need to have demonstrated excellence in overall GPA (2.5 or above) with particular emphasis in math, science, and writing. Students who will be admitted must score in the upper level of the norm group on the ACT and SAT standardized assessments. For admission to the Pre-Forensic Identification program, incoming freshmen must have:
- High School GPA of 2.50 (or better)
- composite ACT score of 20 (or better)
- a minimum ACT Math score of 24
- combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 950 (or better)
- a minimum SAT Math score of 520
Human Resources and Education
The Pre-Education and Pre-Speech Pathology and Audiology incoming freshmen students may qualify either through their high school grade point average (GPA) or through scores on national standardized college entrance tests (ACT or SAT). To be admitted to the program as an incoming freshman, a student must have:
- High School GPA of 3.00 (or better)
- composite ACT score of 22 (or better)
- combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 1030 (or better)
Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism
Direct admission to the School of Journalism is based on ACT/SAT scores and high school GPA.
Students must have the following minimum criteria: * High School cumulative GPA of 2.75 * ACT English score of 23 or SAT Critical Reading score of 530
School of Medicine
**Direct admission to Medical Laboratory Science is based on ACT/SAT scores and high school GPA.
Students must have the following:
- High School GPA of 3.75 or above
- ACT Math score of 26, or SAT Math score of 600, or place into CHEM 115.
School of Nursing
Direct admission to the Nursing Program is based on a combination of high school grade point average (GPA) and composite ACT, orcombined Math and Critical Reading SAT scores. While preference is given to West Virginia residents, qualified students from other states are encouraged to apply. Direct admission space is limited. To be admitted directly to the program as an incoming freshman, a student must have:
- High School GPA of 3.6 (or better)
- composite ACT score of 25 (or better)
- combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 1140 (or better)
Students not meeting the direct admission requirements will be admitted to the pre-Nursing program if their high school GPA is 2.8 or better. Students with a high school GPA less than a 2.8 will be admitted into General Studies.
University Honors College
Freshmen are considered for admission to the University Honors College based on ACT or SAT composite standard scores, high school grade point average, and community service and extracurricular experience. Students must submit an additional application to be considered for admission to the Honors College. Students may be admitted directly or provisionally to the University Honors College.
- ACT composite score of 28 or an SAT combined (math + critical reading) score of 1240 and a minimum GPA of 3.8.
- ACT score of 31 or an SAT combined (math + critical reading) score of 1360 and a minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Designation as a National Merit Semifinalist, with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Designation as a WVU Presidential Scholar.
Provisional admission is determined by high school GPA, standardized test scores, as well as supplemental materials such as a resume and letters of recommendation. Students admitted provisionally must maintain a 3.2 GPA during their first semester at WVU.
