Applying to West Virginia University is easy – simply choose the appropriate student type from the list below and you will be immediately linked to a site which contains all related information and admission requirements. Once we have received your application and all required admission credentials, your file will be reviewed promptly and you will be notified in writing of our decision.

Types of Admissions


First Time Freshman: You are considered a freshman student if you have completed a high school diploma or GED and have not completed any post secondary work at an accredited institution since graduating or obtaining your GED.


Transfer Students: You are considered a transfer student if you have completed any post-secondary (after high school) work at an accredited college/institution.


Graduate Students: You have already attained an undergraduate degree and are applying for a graduate degree program.


International Students: You are a non-U.S. citizen and will be enrolling with F-1 or J-1 visa status.


Health Sciences Center Students: Admission to the undergraduate and professional programs at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center requires a separate application process.


Readmitted Students: You are students who have left the University for at least one complete semester (excluding summer terms) and would like to return.


ACCESS Students: You are students who have completed your junior year of high school with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and wish to take college classes. ACCESS = Attaining College Credits and Experience while in Secondary School


Transient Students : Students who wish to transfer West Virginia University credit back to their home institution.


Senior Citizens: You are a senior citizen of West Virginia (age 65 and older) who meets residency requirements and would like to take classes at West Virginia University.


Non-Degree Students: Applicants seeking additional undergraduate credit or seeking prerequisites for a degree program.


Second Degree Students: You are students who wish to complete a second undergraduate degree. Some majors do not accept students for a second degree, please contact the academic department before applying.
